Guards shot dead in cash-in-transit robbery in East London

The scene outside Southerwood Superspar where two guards were shot dead on Monday morning

SAPS

Two security guards were shot dead during a cash-in-transit robbery in Southernwood in East London on Monday morning.

Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says the guards, aged 49 and 48 were at Southernwood Superspar just after 8 am to collect money from the safe.

He says one guard was inside while the other was guarding the entrance.

Three suspects entered the complex and waited for the guard to exit the shop with the money.

Captain Tonjeni says, both men were fatally shot in the upper body before their weapons were stolen.

A 58-year-old female who was in the shop at the time was also injured and taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition.

Captain Tonjeni says the suspects fled with the stolen money in a grey Ford with no number plates.

The matter will be investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations.
