The Hawks in the Eastern Cape are investigating a brazen cash-in-transit robbery that took place on the R410 near Cacadu (formerly Lady Frere) on Friday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says a security guard was shot and wounded, an undisclosed amount of cash stolen as well as five firearms belonging to the guards, an officer from Correctional Services and a policeman who was driving in an unmarked vehicle.
He says at about 4 pm heavily armed suspects driving in two Isuzu bakkies targeted the cash van, firing several shots, injuring the driver which forced him to stop.
The robbers stole a rifle and two guns from the guards.
W/O Nkohli says it is further alleged the suspects blocked the traffic and robbed a Correctional Service vehicle and a police unmarked vehicle where two more guns were stolen.
He says the suspects fled the scene and one of the getaway bakkies was later found torched on the side of the road.
The Hawks have taken over the investigation.
