A Grade 5 learner from the Garden Route Primary School died after he fell under the wheels of a construction truck on Thursday.
The spokesperson for the KwaNonqaba police station, Sergeant Kappie Kapp, said the truck was doing construction work at the primary school.
"It is alleged that the 11-year-old got caught under the wheels of a construction truck loaded with sand, doing construction work on the school's premises," he said.
Kapp said the learner died on the scene.
Western Cape Department of Education spokesperson, Millicent Merton, said the learners were prohibited from being on the site
She said a few learners reportedly ran onto the site and chased after the truck and it is alleged that he lost his grip and fell under the wheels of the truck.
"The learner's death is absolutely tragic. Our thoughts are with the learner's family, friends and the school's community," Merton said.
According to Sergeant Kapp learners at the school received counselling after the incident.
Police opened a case of culpable homicide.
