A Gqeberha taxi driver, who is one of more than a hundred drunken drivers arrested in the Eastern Cape over the New Year weekend, is expected to appear in court on Monday
He was arrested on Saturday after disregarding a traffic light and unsuccessfully tried to flee.
According to a statement released by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, the man was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.24 g per 100 ml and had no form of identification on him, or did he have the necessary drivers permit.
He was stopped in the vicinity of Uitenhage Road and Ambrose Street with four passengers in his vehicle.
Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security Lawrence Troon says an additional thirteen drunken drivers were arrested on Saturday, bringing the New Year's Day tally to 14 culprits.
Provincial Traffic Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says during the month of December 2021, a total of 443 drunk drivers were arrested by provincial traffic officers.
