Gqeberha security officer killed in armed robbery

File

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said a multi-disciplinary team has been deployed following a cash-in-transit robbery in which a security officer was killed.

Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Avele Fumba, said the incident occurred at approximately 08:30 am in Durban Road in Korsten.

The preliminary investigation indicated that a cash vehicle was reportedly collecting money in the area when seven unidentified armed suspects approached.

"A shootout ensued between the three security guards and the suspects. Tragically, one of the guards sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries," Fumba said.

He said the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Fumba said a multi-disciplinary task team has been deployed and is actively following leads to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The Hawks were also appealing to the public for any information that could help speed up the investigation to come forward.

"We assure them that their identities will be treated with the utmost confidentiality," he said.
