Police in Gqeberha are investigating the alleged rape of a six-year-old learner from Machiu Primary School in the city's Northern Areas.
The incident is believed to have happened on the school grounds on Monday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu told AlgoaFM News that a case of rape had been opened with police.
She said the matter was now in the hands of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
The Chairperson of the School Governing Body Rano Kayser says the school is giving its full cooperation to authorities.
He says they have convened an urgent meeting with parents on Thursday night.
No arrests have been made.
The child is currently in hospital and police are awaiting a medical report.
