Gqeberha metro police arrest suspected hijacker

File

Gqeberha metro police have arrested an alleged hijacking suspect in Motherwell.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the owner of a maroon Datsun Go was seated in his vehicle at a garage in Maku Street just before midnight on Saturday, to load airtime on his cellphone.

She says an unknown man approached him and tried to grab his cellphone when two other men appeared and threatened him with a firearm.

All three suspects got into his car and instructed the driver to drive off when they robbed him of his money.

Colonel Naidu says Metro police officials patrolling in the area, spotted the vehicle and when they stopped it, the suspects fled on foot.

One suspect was arrested and a toy gun was found inside the vehicle.

The suspect, aged 28, is being detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and will appear in the Motherwell Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The search for the other two suspects is continuing.
