Police divers are searching for a 22-year-old Gqeberha man who went missing after he was swept out to sea at Maitland Beach on Friday.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says their duty crew and the Nelson Mandela Bay water rescue network were activated following reports of a drowning in progress.
He says various emergency services, including a rescue craft, NSRI rescue swimmers, SAPS, and a rescue helicopter responded to the scene.
Lambinon says an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search was conducted for the man who went missing in the surf line.
He says two buses carrying employees of a local company had come to the beach for a function.
Lambinon says three students employed by the company, had reportedly waded into the water before the 22-year-old was caught up in rip currents and he was swept out to sea and disappeared.
He said despite the search there remained no sign of the missing man.
An investigation has been opened by the police.
Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search.
