An East London father burying his wife on Saturday says drugs are what caused his 21-year-old son to murder his mother.

Masonwabe Biyana was arrested in May, after the body of his 45-year-old mother, Thandeka Biyana, was found dumped, in Khayelitsha, East London.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli confirmed that the young man appeared before the Mdantsane Magistrates Court and remains remanded in custody.

His father, Mvikeli Biyana, told Algoa FM News that his son had been violent towards his mother before, but they never thought he was capable of murder.

"He recently sat me down and told me that last year, someone had offered him nyaope, apparently to help with his singing career,"

"That is the day we lost the sweet, quiet boy who gave singing lessons to the neighbourhood kids," Biyana said.

His father says on the day of his wife's disappearance, Masonwabe allegedly argued with his mother who scolded him for entering the house while she was mopping the floor.

"Masonwabe says out of anger, he [allegedly] hit her with a brick, covered her in a blanket and dragged her next door," Biyana rehashed.

The woman's body was found by the neighbourhood forum the next day, hidden in the grass behind the shack next door.

In a previous interview with Algoa FM News, Eastern Cape provincial Congress of Traditional Leaders of SA (Contralesa) chairperson, Nkosi Mwelo Nonkonyana expressed concern for the next generation of men.

He said even though Biyana started using drugs after initiation school, it is unfortunate that young men get introduced to hard drugs and substances during this rite of passage.

Nyaope is a popular street drug in South Africa which can contain a mixture of dagga, heroin and anti-retroviral drugs.
