A 55 year-old Nelson Mandela Bay resident has been arrested by Humewood police detectives in connection with the murder of his 39 year-old girlfriend.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu has confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody on Friday, six days after the incident.
This follows after a resident at a block of block of flats on the corners of Deare & Pearson Streets in Central noticed the body of a woman lying on the ground on Sunday morning, the 3rd of July.
The woman had sustained serious head injuries, and at the time, police opened an inquest docket pending further investigation.
The deceased, Andiswa Mpiyana, was living with her boyfriend on the 4th floor of the building.
On questioning the boyfriend, he initially told police that he had left the flat around 4 am on the day in question and that Mpiyana was still asleep.
Thorough investigation and further probing by the investigating officer led police to believe that she did not commit suicide - instead foul play was suspected.
The boyfriend was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
He will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate's court on Monday.
