A Malabar household is counting the cost of a massive pipe burst under their Cramer Street home which saw water gushing inside the property for about an hour.
Sufyaan Ahmed told Algoa FM News that his frantic wife called him at around 8.45 am to say there had been a pipe burst and that their house was being flooded.
He said by the time he arrived from work, about 15 minutes later, they had to break the gate away from the wall to gain entry to the property after the paving had already lifted.
Ahmed says prior to forcing open the gate, he managed to open it a little to get into the property but landed up in a sinkhole that had formed in the yard.
He said he had to grab onto his car to save his life and his wife had to help him out of the sinkhole.
The Metro eventually closed the main valve in Westering over an hour after the burst.
Ahmed says by the time the water was shut off, his property was well underwater.
