Gqeberha learners to protest against the sale of booze to minors

File

Learners from 11 high schools in Motherwell in Gqeberha will march to the police station on Wednesday to present a petition calling for a clampdown on the sale of alcohol to underage persons.

The march is being facilitated by learners who are ambassadors of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board and comes in the wake of the recent tragic deaths of 21 young people at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park in East London.

"The petition will seek to urge police to clamp down on the sale of alcohol to underage persons and to take a decisive action against liquor traders who are involved in this distasteful behaviour," said ECLB spokesperson, Mgwebi Msiya.

He said the learners felt strongly that they must take an action against the scourge of underage drinking and prevent the Enyobeni incident from being repeated.

"This will be an opportunity to further urge other young people and members of the community to play a meaningful role in alleviating the plague of underage drinking. The learners' march will be joined by parents, community members, the clergy, and educators," he said.

After handing over the petition to SAPS the learners will hold a formal event in honour of the Enybeni victims.
