Government has agreed to compensate the humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers for its drought relief work in Makhanda.
A group of interested parties have joined forces in Makhanda in the wake of a R10 million dispute between the Makana Municipality and the humanitarian organisation, over payment for lifesaving interventions to provide water to the drought-stricken area.
Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said they held a constructive meeting on Thursday with the Makana Municipality, together with various stakeholders, including representatives of the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the office of the Premier.
He said payment will be considered for 11 out of the 15 boreholes drilled by Gift of the Givers.
Sooliman said no further intervention is required from them. He said they are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, and will now commence the process of withdrawal from Makhanda.
The EC Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said that a report by the provincial head of the Dept of Water and Sanitation, Portia Makhanya, had verified the work undertaken by GoG and the oversight report has been drafted.
"Ms Makhanya added that some information should be finalised soon in order to bring closure to the outstanding issues," the statement said.
