Traffic was thrown into chaos in the Eastern Cape on Monday following the collapse of a bridge near Kenton on Sea and two sections of road on the R-72 between Port Alfred and Port Elizabeth.
Late in the afternoon, the R-72 between the Nananga Interchange and Kenton on Sea was opened for light motor vehicle use only.
Eastern Cape Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane and Public Works MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, are expected to visit various flood hit areas on Tuesday.
According to a statement from Bhisho, the SA National Roads Agency Limited and the provincial Roads and Public Works Department are busy assessing the extent of the damage to all roads and bridges.
Disaster Management teams are also visiting affected communities to assess the extent of the damage to households, commercial centres and community amenities in order to determine if a disaster needs to be declared.
