Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said Friday morning that “more needs to be done to get Nelson Mandela Bay on the right track”.
He was addressing a media briefing after delivering the keynote address at an Eastern Cape Economic Symposium in East London.
Gordhan acknowledged that there had been some progress in terms of appointments in senior management positions in the metro, adding that he had Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Lechesa Tsenoli were hoping to visit the met-ro again before the May 7 general election.
Speaking at the same media briefing, Premier Noxolo Kiviet said the province was assisting the two East-ern Cape metros “big time” and was working with them with regard to the role the IDZs must play.
As far as Nelson Mandela Bay is concerned, she said “we are working with them on resolving the electricity challenges facing industry”.
Earlier, Gordhan told the symposium that Nelson Mandela Bay was one of the metros whose economic activity was “in decline”.
He added that both Eastern Cape metros were performing “well below the average of the metros” and the IDZs had not been able “to reverse the situation”.
