Good rains over catchment areas and heavy rains in Garden Route

Good falls of rain have been recorded in the catchment areas of Nelson Mandela Bay's main supply dams in the past 48 hours.

The Port Elizabeth branch of the SA Weather Service reports that 72.8 millimetres of rain was measured at Joubertina, 57.6 mm at Patensie, 58 millimetres at Kareedouw and 32.5 millimetres at Kouga.

Last month, it was reported that all the supply dams were full, baring the Impofu which was at 60% of capacity.

Weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says a cut off low with a ridging high is causing an influx of moisture, that has already produced heavy falls in places. Plettenberg Bay had already received 90.4 millimeters in the past 48 hours.

Isolated heavy falls, of 50mm and more, can be expected along the coastal belt and adjacent interior between Plettenberg Bay and Port Alfred which can lead to localized flooding in places.

Sampson says the heavy falls should be over by Tuesday evening, but light rain is still expected on Wednesday, clearing gradually from the west on Thursday.

Meanwhile heavy rainfall is continuing to fall along the Garden Route and Southern Cape area.

While the Garden Route Dam is over flowing, the spokesperson for the Garden Route National Park, Nandi Mgwadlamba requested citizens not the cross fast flowing rivers in the area. The Area Manager for the Knysna section, Johan de Klerk warned that The Piesang River in the Knysna Forest is flooded as are most rivers in the Knysna area.

The George Municipality confirmed power outages in Herold's Bay, Wilderness Heights and Victoria Bay due to the weather conditions. Campers at the Point Caravan Park in Mossel Bay were greeted earlier with gush winds that ripped tents apart. Meiringspoort outside Oudtshoorn will remain closed for now.
