Good rainfall recorded in Nelson Mandela Bay's catchment area

Good rainfall was recorded this weekend over parts of Nelson Mandela Bay's catchment areas.

A spokesperson for the SA Weather Service in Port Elizabeth, Garth Sampson, says although less than 5mm fell in Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas over the weekend, up to 70 mm was measured at Misgund in the Langkloof.

"We had some reports of good rainfall from the catchment areas in the Langkloof, with Misgund between 50mm and 70mm, Kareedouw had a nice 32mm, but unfortunately, Joubertina had about 10mm to 20mm", Sampson said.

"This is very good news, after some severe thunderstorms in the Baviaanskloof last week, so this should give some run-off into the dams", he said.

Sampson said although it was still too early to say for sure, current models showed that some more rain could be expected again next weekend.

"Over the short-term, I looked at the models, and it looks like, towards the first weekend of February, we could have another system coming through, but it is a bit early to say at this stage", he said on Sunday.

"Looking at the medium to long-term, it is still below average for the rest of the season, right up to the end of May when the forecast period ends", Sampson said.
