More than 70 elderly Eastern Cape residents have been given a new lease on life after undergoing life-changing cataract surgery this weekend.

The Eastern Cape Health Department said out of the 150 people who were screened, 75 were selected to under the operation at St Barnabas Hospital in Libode.

“The cataract surgeries were part of a medical outreach that the Eastern Cape Department of Health embarked on in partnership with the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB),” said Department spokesperson, Yonela Dekeda.

Eastern Cape Health MEC, Nomakhosazana Meth, visited the hospital and described the outreach as a success.

“Everybody is happy. We are grateful to our partners. When we joined the department in 2021 we did pronounce to say we will use partners to fast-track the work that we do.

MEC Meth said the EC Health Department would continue with these outreach programmes “so that we take services to where people are and bring hope to our people.”

The cataract surgeries at St Barnabas is the latest partnership between the Department and the SANCB.
