South African running sensation Gerda Steyn broke her down-run Comrades Marathon record on Sunday when she successfully defended her title.
When Steyn crossed the finish line at 5:49:46, she became the fifth woman to have won the Comrades Marathon three times.
She added to her wins in 2019 and 2023.
Steyn is the current holder of the up-and-down-run Comrades records.

Piet Wiersma of the Netherlands emerged victorious in the men's race.
Wiersma, who crossed the finish line in 5:25:01, claimed his maiden Comrades title.

This year marks the 97th Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal.
A total of 20,000 runners signed up to do the 85,91 km up-run.
