George resident dies as house goes up in flames

A 70-year-old man from George has died after his home went up in flames.

Police said bystanders tried in vain to rescue the Pacaltsdorp resident whose house in Mission Street caught alight Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson said bystanders tried to extinguish the flames by using buckets of water.

Fire safety officers are doing preliminary investigations as to the cause of the fire.

The identity of the man will be released once his next of kin has been informed.
