George mayoral committee reshuffled

The George mayoral committee was reshuffled this weekend by the DA.

This was announced on Saturday and came amid ongoing concerns over the past year that in-fighting among DA councillors was having an impact on service delivery.

Western Cape Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell announced that four councillors;, Mercia Draghoender, Belrina Cornelius, Gert Niehaus and Johan Stander would be replaced on the 12-member mayoral committee.

Speaker Iona Kritzinger and Chief Whip Michael Nyakati have been transferred to the mayoral committee.

DA Regional Chairperson Jaco Londt said that the changes were made following several concerns regarding the governance of George.

He said the DA established a sub-committee to investigate the matters and submit a report to the party's Federal Executive.

"The Federal Executive considered the report and approved certain interventions. Our main aim as the DA is to deliver quality services to the residents where we govern.  George is not where it should be and the Councillors didn't move forward together as a team," he said.

"We believe that this is the first step to getting George back as one of our flagship municipalities.  The caucus members accepted the decision in good spirit and they are committed to delivering the best possible service to the residents of George," he said.
