George mayor suspended from DA activities for 60 days

George Mayor, Melvin Naik, has been suspended from all DA activities for the 60 days.

This was confirmed on Monday by the chairperson of the DA's East Region, Jaco Londt.

Naik returned to work on Monday after taking leave following a raid on the Municipality's offices last month, requested by the DA to probe allegations of tender irregularities.

Lond said that Naik's suspension does not preclude him from performing his mayoral duties.

"I can confirm that the PEC considered the request from the regional executive to suspend the George mayor, Melvin Naik, from party and party-related activities.  They agreed that he should be suspended but decided that it could be done for a period of 60 days," he said.

Londt said that this will allow the internal party processes as well as any other processes run by the Hawks to run its course and then the party will reconsider the situation with regard to the Mayor at the conclusion of the two months.

Naik's office declined to comment.

In a statement in April, following the Hawks raid, Naik said that " as far they could ascertain, certain people, unhappy with the results of tenders which they did not even tender for, made allegations regarding these tenders to the Provincial Government of the Western Cape."

He said the Provincial Government referred the matter to SAPS for investigation some time ago.

“All that is currently happening, is that SAPS is gathering evidence, to see whether there is any substance to the allegations.  I can assure you that I am completely innocent of any wrongdoing, and I am convinced that the current investigation will prove this, Naik said.

“I will ask that everyone involved in this matter respects the process and let the investigation and other processes that might follow, run its course before trying me and other innocents involved in the court of public opinion,” he concluded.
