Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani was the first speaker and said the number of people filling the hall spoke volumes of the high regard in which Watson was held, not only in his hometown of Port Elizabeth but also across the nation
Gavin Watson's daughter, Linzie then read out a letter written by her grandmother to her now late son.
The 73-year-old Watson was killed on Monday last week when his car ploughed into a concrete pillar near the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
The former PE businessman was alone in the car at the time of the accident.
Watson courted much controversy after he and his company Bosasa, now trading as African Global Operations, were implicated in corruption and bribery involving a number of top-ranking government officials - following testimony delivered at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
