"Gas flows" at Coega IDZ

Gas is flowing at Air Products R300 million air separation unit (ASU) in the Coega IDZ, the company has announced with tankers lining up and the newly commissioned plant.

Air Products said this made it “the first to bring a secure, localised supply of industrial gases to Eastern Cape industry”.

The ASU came online this month with the investment at Coega “in response to growing demand and positive economic signals from the region.

“The new facility strengthens the Eastern Cape’s supporting infrastructure for industrial investment and adds value to local industry through security of supply and supply chain efficiencies.”

The plant, which has a production capacity of 100 tons a day of liquid oxygen and nitrogen, is equipped with state-of-the-art cryogenic air separation technology in order “to deliver optimal energy efficiency.

The company noted in a statement that it had broken ground for the new facility in May last year and “has met its commitment to commission the plant and have gas flowing to Eastern Cape customers before the end of 2014”.

Air Products manufactures, supplies and distributes a “diverse portfolio” of atmospheric gases, speciality gases, performance materials, equipment and services to the Southern African region.
The company has already secured new business in the IDZ from its neighbours First Auto Works (FAW) and APM Terminals.
