A 9-month-old baby from Great Brak River who suffered severe burn wounds a fortnight ago, is still in a critical but stable condition in the Red Cross Children's Hospital.
The girl sustained serious burn wounds to her legs, arm and head, after her 26-year-old mother allegedly left her home alone with a candle burning next to her bedside.
Police confirmed to Algoa FM News that doctors at the hospital informed them that the child's arm will have to be amputated below her elbow.
The baby sustained more than 30% burn wounds.
The mother, who was transported with the child to the hospital, was arrested by members of the Mossel Bay Family Violence and Child Protection Services on Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect will appear in the Mossel Bay court on charges of child negligence and child abuse.
