Garden Route Fires: Residents on snake alert!


Garden Route authorities have urged members of the community to be on the lookout for snakes, other reptiles and wildlife as the animals will be pushed from their natural habitat due to the fires.

Residents will definitely encounter more of these animals and reptiles in the urban areas.

People are also urged to walk around with a flashlight, especially at night.

Meanwhile, the Outeniqua Fire remains active in Waboomskraal.

Additional firefighters have been deployed from Working on Fire and will exceed 300 persons by this afternoon.

WARNING:

  • Keep windows and doors closed until further notice as protection against smoke and heat.
  • Keep pets indoors where possible.
  • Move garden furniture that is flammable under cover where possible.
  • Elderly and persons with health issues who are able to voluntarily remove themselves from the areas adjacent to slopes of the mountain to please do so.

Residents in Blanco, Golden Valley and Stepaside in George are being evacuated due to the wildfires that have been raging in the Outeniqua mountains since Thursday.
George is currently blanketed in a heavy haze of smoke from the fires.
Municipal spokesperson Chantel Edward Klose says the traffic department and the South African Police Service are assisting with the evacuation.
She emphasised that it's purely a precautionary evacuation.
