The fires that have been raging in the Vermaaklikheid area of the Garden Route have been contained, but one more home was lost during a flare-up.
The Garden Route District Municipality said in a statement that by 7 pm Wednesday night “the wildfire had been contained although there were a limited number of hotspots.”
Approximately 5000ha had been burnt while a total of nine houses were destroyed.
On Tuesday, George pilot, 65-year-old Nico Heyns died when his Working On Fire helicopter crashed.
The GRD Municipality meanwhile commended the local community and land users who had been assisting the more than 100 fire-fighters who were battling the fires since Sunday.
The fire-fighting efforts were also supported by an SA Airforce Oryx Helicopter, two “water bombers” and a spotter plane.
