Gang wars rage on in Northern Areas

A 30 year-old man was shot dead in a suspected gang-related shooting near the Kwik Spar in Beetlestone Road, Gelvandale, on Friday morning.

The fellow occupant of a light blue Toyota Corrola was hit in the side and is in a stable condition in hospital.

At least 7 shots were fired at the vehicle by unkown gunmen who are still at large.

This latest fatality brings to at least six the number of people killed in the on-going gang wars in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas this week.

Police Warrant Officer Alwin Labans told AlgoaFM News that two men were murdered in Kleinskool - one on Thursday night, and the other in the early hours of Friday morning.

On Tuesday night, police found the bodies of two men who had been shot and killed in the yard of a house in Bloemendal.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, two men shot and killed a 33 year-old man after kicking down the door of his house in Booysen's Park.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Safety MEC, Weziwe Tikana, says the gang violence is the most serious threat to peace and stability in Nelson Mandela Bay.

She was speaking at the launch of the Safer Festive Season programme in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

MEC Tikana said Premer Phumulo Masualle had instructed that a muliti-disciplinary task team be established to intervene in the city's northern areas.

Executive Mayor, Danny Jordaan, added that as the festive season approaches, there must a step up in the fight against crime.

He said all law enforcement agencies must work together to give effect to the Safety Plan that had been devised.
