Future looks brighter for 8-year old PE rape victim

Advocate Linda le Roux of the National Prosecuting Authority says doctors from the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town are expected to fly to Port Elizabeth next week to examine an 8-year old rape victim.

The girl was 6- year's old when she was brutally raped in Motherwell in 2011 and now wears a colostomy bag because of the severity of her injuries.

Her attacker, 33-year old Xolile Tose was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth High Court earlier this month.

Le Roux says the child and her family have been placed in a safe care haven so that their needs can be addressed holistically as a family.

She says further medical intervention will take place once the girl's medical needs have been assessed.

"To really make a difference we need to see what the needs are for the whole family. To only focus on her can sometimes lead to other problems, so we decided to look at the whole family and it seems like we are definitely going to make a huge difference in their lives. It's now in the beginning phases but there is definitely a good prospectus for this family, even for her schooling which was a concern." say le Roux

Relatives embrace each other after Judge Jeremy Pickering passes a life sentence on Xolile Tose in the Port Elizabeth High Court.
