Fourteen people killed in another black weekend on EC Roads

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana has offered her condolences to the families and loved ones of the 14 people killed and several others injured in various accidents across the province at the weekend. One of those killed was a pedestrian.

It was one of the busiest weekends on the province’s roads so far this year as families returned home from various holiday destinations ahead of schools re-opening for the 3rd Term on Tuesday.

The conclusion of the annual National Arts Festival on Sunday also added to the high volume of traffic as art lovers and general revelers also headed home.

MEC Tikana called on road users to continue being extra cautious and patient as traffic volumes are expected to remain high on Monday.

In the latest of the deadly weekend accidents, three people were killed on Sunday night when an SUV with three occupants lost control on a sharp bend on the N2 between  King William’s Town and Peddie.

The SUV hit a bakkie and a sedan that were travelling in the opposite direction. All three occupants of the SUV died on the scene, while the drivers of the other two vehicles were rushed to Nompumelelo Hospital with serious injuries.

The pedestrian was killed when struck by a vehicle on the R61 near Corhana in Mthatha earlier in the day.

Also on Sunday,  one person died on the R396 between Maclear and Tsolo and the driver and a passenger were killed on the N2 between Dutywa and Butterworth.

On Saturday, two people were killed in an accident between Komani and Lady Frere and another person died in a collision between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet.

On Friday night, there was one fatality in an accident between Mt Fletcher and Maclear while three other people were killed in a crash in the Alfred Ndzo District.
