Police in Gqeberha have opened an inquest docket after a four-year-old girl drowned in a fast-flowing river.
The tragic incident occurred in Bloemendal on Tuesday when a mother, carrying the child, attempted to cross a river close to Nooitegedacht Road.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, said little girl became detached from her mother and was swept away.
He said her body was recovered by police divers and members of the K9 rescue team on the same afternoon.
The matter is being investigated by SAPS Bethelsdorp.
The child's name has not yet been released.
