Four people were killed when a Toyota Avanza collided with a bakkie on the R61.
The accident happened on Monday morning just outside Ngcobo travelling towards Mthatha.
A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says it is alleged that the Avanza picked up hitchhikers which seemed to upset a local taxi association.
He says the Avanza was allegedly being chased and fled in the direction of Mthatha, when the Avanza approached a bend it collided head-on with an oncoming Ford LDV (Light delivery vehicle).
Binqose says three passengers in the Avanza died on the scene while a fourth succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Three passengers in the Avanza and one from the Ford sustained injuries and were transported to All Saints Hospital.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
The names of the victims are not yet known.
