Four Eastern Cape Municipalities have the dubious distinction of being on the top-10 list of municipalities with the highest percentage of assault related deaths in the country.
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality is ranked number one at 27.7 percent according to the “Mortality and causes of death in South Africa 2015: Findings from death notification”, released by Statistics South Africa on Tuesday.
The information focused on causes of death that occurred in 2015 and were processed for the period 1 January 2015 to 27 August 2016.
O.R Thambo District Municipality has been ranked second on the list at 27.2 percent with Chris Hani and Amathole District municipalities at 6th and 8th place respectively.
Eden Municipality on the Garden Route in the Western Cape is ranked 10th on the list with a percentage of 22.7 percent.
StatsSA also revealed that tuberculosis, or TB, is still the leading cause of death in the country.
According to findings TB killed more than 33 000 people in 2015 and accounted for 7.2 percent of all deaths last year.
StatsSA also revealed that TB claimed more lives of men than woman with 8.3 percent deaths of males.
A total number of deaths which occurred in 2015 was 460,236
