Fort Hare students protest in East London

Students at the University of Fort Hare in East London have gathered at the campuses main building saying they no longer trust the meetings happening behind closed doors.

The SRC and campus management have been in talks on a range of demands that relate to student accommodation, shuttle services and compensation to those students whose computers were stolen at one of the residences last year.

Last Wednesday students embarked on a stay away and submitted a memorandum with the grievances to Universities management.

On Wednesday, however, students marched to the building saying they want to talk directly to management about what is being done about their issues.

The SRC's legal affairs officer, Lundi Mbutho, says management have so far requested a meeting with the SRC representatives but students will not allow it.

Mbuto says he sees no issues with management addressing the students, as they are the major stakeholders, however no one has approached the students so far.
