Fort Beaufort Museum destroyed in fire

Fort Beaufort museum on fire

supplied by Department of Sport Arts and Culture

One of the oldest buildings in Fort Beaufort was damaged by a fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Fort Beaufort museum, established in early 1800 was one of 17 funded by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the Province.

A Spokesperson for the Department Andile Nduna says they were saddened to hear the news about the fire and condemned those responsible.

He says the museum had a comprehensive collection of both military and domestic artefacts dating back as far as 1820.

The weapons room had an excellent firearm exhibit, which included one of the country's largest single collections of flintlock and percussion cap rifles, as well as a document featuring the names of every British soldier who fought in the Anglo Boer War.
