Former top cop arrested for fraud

Former acting police commissioner Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane has been arrested in connection with procurement fraud and was due to appear in court on Friday.

His arrest follows an investigation by police watchdog IPID into procurement irregularities on the fitting of blue light emergency equipment to police vehicles to the amount of R86 million.

Spokesperson Moses Dlamini says they arrested Phahlane with another Major General on Friday morning.

It is understood that Major General Ravichandran Pillay the head of SA Police Service's supply chain management, was arrested along with him.

Several arrests were carried out on the same case last year.

The accused were allegedly involved in the awarding of a fraudulent tender to Instrumentation Traffic Law Enforcement, owned by millionaire Vimpie Manthatha.

Phahlane headed the police from 2015 to 2017.
