A former SARS employee has been jailed for 15 years in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.
Petrus Meyer (55) was sentenced Wednesday after he was earlier found guilty on three counts of fraud and one of corruption.
According to a statement from the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, Meyer had assisted jailed Port Elizabeth firearms dealer, Arthur Webb "to submit to SARS fraudulent Value-Added Tax returns."
"Consequently, SARS paid out R 4.1 million to Webb," said Hawks spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Feni.
"The Commercial Crime unit of the Hawks arrested Meyer and Webb during May 2013. Webb was sentenced in 2015 before the same court to undergo 15-years direct imprisonment for three counts of Fraud and one count of Corruption," she said.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Head for the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major-General Nyameko Nogwanya stressed that those who preferred crooked ways to obtain wealth would ultimately face the wrath of the law.
