A horse, believed to be a sought-after racehorse, is recovering at the Garden Route SPCA in George after being found in a horrific condition in New Dawn Park.
The SPCA says Coniston Gold has a microchip implant and is believed to have participated in more than 20 horse races between 2013 and 2014.
A concerned neighbour called the SPCA about the horse's condition and it was removed from the premises this week.
The SPCA says this is the worst case of malnourishment they have seen.
An animal abuse complaint will be laid against the horse's owner.
