Former PE woman wins Oscar

A former pupil at Port Elizabeth's Collegiate Girls High School is South Africa's latest Oscar winner.

Margaret Sixell who matriculated in 1976 won the Oscar for Best Film Editing of the movie Mad Max, Fury Road.

Louise Erasmus, the Deputy Principal for Curricular and PR & Marketing at Collegiate, said "we are very happy."

"In fact yesterday (Monday) when we heard the news it was quite a feeling in the staffroom especially since one of our staff members was in her matric year.  The fact that a Collegiate girl can go on and win an Oscar in a film that has done so incredibly well with editing of it, is really something amazing and something for our girls to look up to and aspire to. Maybe one day they'll hold an Oscar too," she said.

Erasmus said the school was hoping that Sixell would visit Nelson Mandela Bay in May for their 40th reunion.

Sixell joins other South African Oscar winners, Charlize Theron, who won the Oscar for Best Actress in the movie, Monster.

The South African movie Tsotsi won the Academy Award for a foreign language film while Neil Blomkamp was nominated in the category Writing Adapted Screenplay for the movie District 9.
