Former Kouga employees fined thousands for theft

Two former employees from the Kouga Municipality have been sentenced to a fine of R100 000 each in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.

Athenkosi Peter and Mandla Siheula were sentenced on Wednesday to the fine or 3 years imprisonment plus 4 years imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years.

State Prosecutor, Wilhelm de Villiers, says the two were stationed in Humansdorp and were employed as cashiers who received pre-paid electricity money, they then banked transactions for their own personal use.

According to the state,  the theft involving more than R100 000 took place during July 2011 and March 2012.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit has since seized both their pension benefits.

The two pleaded not guilty and were convicted earlier this year.
