A 32-year-old former Hankey farmworker has been found guilty on 16 charges related to a farm attack in the Hankey area last March in which a woman was shot and raped during a four-hour ordeal.
Sibenzile Simane was convicted in the Port Elizabeth High Court on Wednesday on a 17th charge related to a robbery in Patensie a month earlier.
In handing down judgment, Judge Olav Ronaasen, said that the testimony of the woman had been corroborated by other state witnesses that included police investigators and a forensic expert.
The court heard that Simane's DNA was found at the crime scene even though he maintained his innocence throughout the trial.
The judge said the woman had proven to be an impressive witness throughout her harrowing two-day testimony, where she detailed how Simane tortured her family and raped her in front of her 13-year-old daughter.
Ronaasen said that he had clearly and meticulously planned the attack on the family.
The judge is expected to pass sentence on Thursday.
