A former police Constable attached to the flying squad in Komani was sentenced to an effective five years in prison for fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
Police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci says the 38-year-old Sipho Eric Nene protected drug dealers by escorting them through town without stopping them while transporting their cargo.
She says Nene, was paid for these services.
Soci says the matter came to light in 2017 and Nene was dismissed from SAPS a few months later following an internal hearing.
Nene was arrested by the Anti Corruption Investigation Unit on 31 January 2017 who set up a trap for him.
Colonel Soci says Nene appeared in the Queenstown District Court the following day and was released on warning until his sentencing earlier this week.
Another one of his flying squad members, the 52-year-old Warrant Officer Amos Rafu was sentenced to five years in prison in October last year.
Soci says more cases are at a trial stage at the Queenstown Regional Court and more sentences are expected.
