A former Eastern Cape journalist and well-known Port Alfred surfer has died, having possibly suffered a medical incident while in the water.
NSRI station commander, Chris Pike, said 55-year-old Dave McGregor had a close relationship with them for decades.
He said the NSRI duty crew was activated at 17h05 on Monday following reports of a surfer in difficulty at Kelly's Beach, in Port Alfred.
Pike said the crew responded directly to the scene, along with other role players including the SAPS, EC
Government Health EMS and Gardmed ambulance services.
"On arrival on the scene extensive CPR efforts continued on the adult man but after all efforts were exhausted sadly the man was declared deceased," he said.
Pike said it appeared that other surfers noticed he may have been unconscious in the water at his surfboard in the surf zone, from undetermined causes, and they rescued him to the shoreline where they initiated CPR.
"Ndlambe lifeguards and NSRI members, who were nearby at the time, joined in the CPR efforts and the alarm was raised," he said.
