Former Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Director, Roland Williams appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Port Elizabeth on Friday where he was sentenced to four years in prison.

The 50-year-old Williams who was found guilty of fraud charges in 2018 breached the terms and conditions of his sentence.
Williams was sentenced to 36 months of correctional supervision, a suspended four-year prison sentence, and was fined R30 000 for defrauding Santam.

He was also ordered to back the R96 000 that had been paid out to him.

The National Prosecuting Authority said Santam had submitted an affidavit to the state, reporting that the last payment Williams made to them was in October 2019 and that he still owed them R 40 000.

His four- year sentence was initially suspended for 5 years on the condition that he repay the R96 000 that had been paid out to him, in monthly instalments of R3,500.

Williams' defence attorney, Anlen Murray, furnished the court with documents on Friday to show that her client was suffering financially.

Documents showed that Williams, whose child goes to St Dominic's Priory School, was in arrears with school fees to the amount of R340 000 for the period between 2019 and 2021.

A document from the sheriff's office was also submitted to show that his car had been repossessed.

A property, which is in Williams' name is also in the process of being sold.

Williams was arrested in November last year but managed to pay the outstanding amount to Santam.

Magistrate Lionel Lindoor, however, said he was still in breach of his sentencing conditions.

Williams applied for leave to appeal, stating through his defence attorney that the sentence was "shockingly inappropriate" and that he believed another court would come to a different conclusion.

Leave to appeal was denied.
