Former Buffalo City mayor, Zukiswa Faku, made a brief appearance in the East London magistrate's court on Tuesday.
She faces a charge of fraud which allegedly relates to the misuse of a municipality credit card during a trip overseas in 2009.
Dispatch Online reports that she was formally charged on nine counts of fraud involving around R15,000 rand.
Her case was postponed to the 25th of June.
East London police spokesperson, captain Steven Marais, says a large crowd of supporters gathered outside the magistrate's court.
