The Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has sentenced an illegal immigrant from Malawi to 15-years imprisonments for defrauding a Motherwell teacher of R669 000 in a get reach quick scam.
Bashir Kasenjera was found guilty of fraud and corruption earlier this month after tricking Mlungisi Booi into resigning from his teaching post and then cashing in his pension because his ancestors would multiply it.
In October 2017, Booi resigned from his post as a teacher and received a pension lump sum of just over R1-million in March 2018.
Two weeks after receiving his pension, Kasenjera swindled a total of R669 000 from the victim.
Kasenjera was arrested by Motherwell detectives a month later and during the arrest, he tried to bribe the police with R100 000 for his release.
Dozens of teachers have fallen victim to these scams with cases dating back to 2016.
