Fleeing PE mom arrested for abandoning three-day-old baby

A Port Elizabeth woman who allegedly abandoned her three-day old baby in bushes in Kwadwesi extension, has been arrested.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, said that the 24-year-old woman was found at a taxi rank on Thurday night, allegedly as she prepared to flee the area.

"The naked baby was found partially covered with soil. She was rescued and taken to Dora Nginza Hospital where she is recovering and will be taken to a place of safety," said Beetge.

He said police subsequently issued an appeal to the Kwadwesi community for help which he said garnered a huge response.

"The huge response paid off and last night just after 20:15 the mother was arrested at Kwadwesi taxi rank after information was received from community members that she was about to attempt to flee the area."

The Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major-General Dawie Rabie thanked the community for their valuable assistance in the tracing of the mother.

"The SAPS management also wish to thank those members of community who donated clothing items for the baby girl" he added.

"The case is investigated by the Motherwell Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and the mother will face charges of attempted murder and child abandonment before the New Brighton Magistrates Court on Monday," Beetge said.
