The George Municipality will be embarking on an road safety awareness programme following the tragic death of a five year old girl who was killed while crossing the R-102 airport road.
The Manager for George Traffic Services, Mark Green, says he's distressed by the girl's death.
But, he says the Municipality cannot condone the irresponsible actions of some parents in allowing a child of that age to play unsupervised alongside a busy road.
Green says it appears that the child had been playing with friends and then ran across the road when she was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
He says the George Municipality will now engage the N-2 task group as a medium to sensitise local communities to educate and inform adults on issues around road safety awareness with specific regard to children.
