Police have arrested five taxi operators at the Ntlaza taxi rank between Mthatha and Libode following a shooting incident at the locality on Tuesday.
Several shots were fired at a taxi driver at around 12.30 pm. He escaped unharmed. Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition and confiscated the vehicle the suspects were travelling in - it belongs to one of the taxi associations operating in the area.
Captain Dineo Koena says the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they have been used in the commissioning of any other crimes. All the suspects, aged between 28 and 41, are from the Port St John's area.
They'll appear in the Ngqeleni Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
