Five suspects due in court following armed robbery in Uitenhage

The getaway vehicle pulled over by SAPS following an armed robbery in Kamesh

Five men, all aged 23, are expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates' Court on Monday following an armed robbery at a supermarket in Kamesh on Sunday.

Spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli says it is alleged that three men, one armed with a rifle, stored the shop in A. Tambo Crescent in Kamesh where they held up two shop assistants.

The suspects ransacked the shop and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, an airtime machine and a Nokia phone.

Nkohli says police quickly responded and obtained a description of the getaway vehicle which they spotted in Melbrook Street, driving at high speed.

He says police gave chase and managed to corner the vehicle in Nomakhwezana Street.

During the arrest, police seized an air gun, cap gun, airtime machine six cellphones and a backpack full of cash.
